  • David McCullough Essay Prizes

    Prepare your entry for the David McCullough Essay Prizes

     

    High school students are invited to participate in the David McCullough Essay Prizes. The 2025 contest deadline is June 27 at 8 p.m. ET.

     

    To assist students, teachers, and parents in their preparation, the Institute will host a Virtual Research Night on February 6 at 7 p.m. ET.

  • 26th Annual Frederick Douglass Book Prize

    Congratulations to this year's winners

    Join us in New York City to celebrate the 2024 winners of the Frederick Douglass Book Prize. The prize is awarded to outstanding books published on the subject of slavery, resistance, and/or abolition. This year we will honor two authors—Marlene L. Daut for Awakening the Ashes: An Intellectual History of the Haitian Revolution and Sara E. Johnson for Encyclopédie Noire: The Making of Moreau de Saint-Méry’s Intellectual World.

     

    Date and Time: Tuesday, February 11 at 6 p.m.

  • EduHam Online

    Hamilton Education Program Online

     

    Explore the newly redesigned EduHam Online website. It includes classroom account creation, a historical research library, a program roadmap, and a video library. You can now access the site using your Gilder Lehrman login and password (or create an account for free). 

     

    Students in grades 6–12 are encouraged to submit their completed projects to the EduHam Online lottery for a chance to win a trip to New York City and see Hamilton on Broadway. The deadline is February 14.

    Professor Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham (Harvard University) recounts the story of African Americans from their beginnings in Africa, through centuries of enslavement in the United States, and during the Civil War years’ promise of freedom. In this course, you will learn about the momentous events, heroic voices, social movements, cultural beliefs, and creative forms that are expressive of everyday life.
