They have not heard from the army since they passed Jackson. Phil owes him a letter. The weather has been cold.He has not seen Bill for days.

He bought a new overcoat and blanket. He will send them home. It is hard to tell where they will go next.

They arrived near Chicago. Along the way, the major lost a horse and one of his feet got cut off. They are 160 miles from Chicago. They saw 200 secessionist soldiers in cars bound for Southern states. Last page very faded.

Now in Jackson, Tennessee, they started for this place in the dark and now it is early morning. They have been busy putting up their tents. There is a lot of cotton around and he plans to send her some.

He is very healthy and is even gaining weight. George is out on picket. He got a letter from Bill. Last night, he was on guard.

They have been foraging for chicken and beef. They have also been chopping wood. He suspects it is their last night here. Shane was there today. He has been sick.

They are working on the fortifications. They do the mechanical work but the digging and lifting is done by negroes. Geroge and Miller are well.

He believes he will get paid soon. He sent her a ring. Bill is at Black River but he has not seen him. Mrs. Hill is enjoying herself.

Bill came in with him and George the other day. Gen. Hurlbut returned from his expedition. He has not see Bill Gallagher yet. He mentions the ring he made for her again.

Bill Gallagher was there last Sunday but has gone up the river again. Gunther Hathaway was either killed or taken prisoner. He doesn't know when they will get paid next.

He describes Mrs. Hill's room. He received a letter from Uncle Ira and all are well. Nearly all of the old regiment reenlisted. He hopes Lincoln will be reelected.

He knows they will go up to Tennessee when the Red RIver expedition is over but beyond that he doesn't know where they will go since the army is getting reorganized in the spring. He says the fortifications will be the strongest in the United States.

He has not heard from the regiment in some time, but suspects they will go to Black River when they come back. They may not get any pay for a long time.

He has had the ague but is feeling better this morning. The 95th is going up the river when they come back from the Red River expedition. He got a letter from Burt who is running for collector.

The regiment is about 200 miles up Red river. They expect to go back to the regiment but no one knows when. William Stevenson is sick.

They have skirmished with the rebels nearly every day. When he gets his pay he will give it to his father to keep for him.

They came upon a large force of the Rebels. The Rebels marched them on the double quick for about five miles in the middle of the day. Lt. Tishel was wounded. Rollins and Williams were killed.

There is another expedition starting from here to try to drive the Rebels out of the country. Geroge and Bill are there. Fe have been killed or wounded.

Gerell is getting along great and so is everyone that was wounded. It is getting very warm but he doesn't want to move until it is cooler. John Rolling is trying to find his brother that was killed.

They are not doing much. Luther Lawrence was there yesterday. He has been going to meeting and listening to preaching twice on Sundays.

They have a first rate camp and it is so warm they are not using tents. He goes over who has gotten better and who will be getting discharged soon due to injury or sickness.

Willl Brigg was wounded and taken prisoner. He has a cane head that was made from the tree that Vicksburg was surrendered under.

He has not seen Bill Redfield since they went out. He got a photograph of Col. Humphrey which he is enclosing. George is very healthy and has charge of the cooking.

Jesse Thawes was taken prisoner. He was skirmishing and got in the Rebels' lines before he knew it. He thinks Bill is out on the railroad. A man shot himself through the hand.

George got a letter from Marillo last night. His father's health is very poor. He cannot tell which way they are going but will write when he finds out.

They landed at their current location on the 6th. He says there is not much of a town there. He has been on picket duty a lot so now there are things to do.

They are building fortifications which keeps them busy nearly all the time. They finally got their tents so they can get out of the rain.

They are in Dwalls Bluff but have orders to go up the river and find the Rebels. A friend was discharged so he might send some money by him.

They may send the Illinois boys home. He wants to give Lincoln another vote. There is no likelyhood of a draft in Boone County. He hopes Grant can do something with Richmond this fall.

They left Brownsville and have marched everyday since. They have traveled about 350 miles total. He is hoping to get some newspapers soon. Written at Camp Girardeau

He saw Luther Lawrence who told him that father had died about a month ago. He desperately wants to receive mail from her.

They are living very well. They are quartered in a building for once and there is a large stove. John Cocoran died. James Trisdell is their captain.

They are waiting for the railroad cars to take them to Memphis. He was hoping he could see her sometime but it doesn't look like there will be any more furloughs this winter.
