At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph of the Cuban X Giants Negro league baseball team circa 1900. A group photo with twelve men. The Cuban X-Giants were a professional Negro league baseball team that played from 1896 to 1906. They were one of the most powerful independent black teams around the turn of the century winning the 1903 Colored World Championship, beating the Philadelphia Giants five games to two. The legendary Andrew "Rube" Foster, the father of Negro League baseball, pitched four of the five victories.
