At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph negative of a group circa 1920. The photograph features a group of men and women posing or the camera. There are at least six people in the group however, there is section of black fogging in the upper right corner to the center of the photo, likely due to an error in the developing process. The fogging covers at least the face of at least two members of the group.
