At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph negative strip dated circa 1920. Features two negatives on one stip. The first negative features three women posing for the camera with the middle woman resting her arms on the shoulders of the two women standing next to her. The second negative features a woman in profile laughing at someone off camera.
