Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph of a woman circa 1920. The photograph features a woman posing for the camera. The woman is in her swimsuit standing in front of a pile of hay. A note on the rear of the photo reads, How would you like to swim in a haystack!" A stamp on the back reads, "Kays Photo Shop, Lacrosse, Wis." One of the same women as in GLC10047.02.271.
