At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One greeting card from Joan Pietry to Robert E. Dyer dated June 21, 1944. Features a dog thinking about a letter. The front of the card reads, "Hello, Stranger You wouldn't know apparently." The inside reads, "But U.S. Mail still reaches Me!" The inside features a mail dog dumping a pile of letters out of a mail bag for the dog that was on the front cover.
