At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to "Sir" from C.W. Mason dated October 20, 1906. Mason writes to ask about the culture of one of the counties in Oklahoma City. States that he is a teacher and former lawyer looking to "make an honest living." Reverse side contains a reply dated October 22, 1906. Describes the infrastructure and housing costs for the area.
