At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Joan Pietry to Robert E. Dyer postmarked March 22, 1944. Features a cartoon of a crowd of people under a clock the caption reads, "Sometimes it's even worse. Everybody always says they will meet under the clock." An annotation in pen reads, "Meet you by the clock at Daniels."
