At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One set of sketches by Henry Berckhoff dated 1861-1863. Taken from a sketchbook which has been disbound. Graphite and watercolor sketches on wove paper, mounted on green stock. Ink frames were drawn around each image, and a caption have been added. Private Berchoff served with Company B, 8th New York regiment "First German Rifles". The original sketchkbook boards and two pages with four images are included. The sketches are entitled:
Battle on Manassas plains 2nd Bull Run 29 August 1862
Battle of Cross Keyes 8 June 1862
Camp at Roache's Mill August 1861
Gen Blenker at the close of the battle of Bull Run 21 July 1861
