Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One map entitled Map of the vicinity of Richmond and part of the peninsula dated 1864. Photographically produced map with watercolor. "Photographed in Off. Top. Dep. D.N.V." Scale 1/80,000. Map compiled by Lieutenant McDonald. Produced in sections by a photographic process and then hand-tinted in pale blue color to produce a large folding map. By the First Army Corps Engineers, Lee's Army of northern Virginia. A very detailed and exact map of the approaches to Richmond. The first panel has a pencil sketch of a bust and inscription "M. McDonald."
