Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One sketch detailing the conversion of merchant vessels into torpedo ships dated circa 1810. Two paneled drawing showing conversion of merchant vessels into torpedo ships. Each sides contains notes written by Fulton about obtaining and outfitting the ships. In pencil with gray and blue-gray washes. With stamp of New Jersey Historical Society. The ships were planned as part of the east coast defense against British attack. For more information, refer to "Fulton's Torpedo War and Submarine Explosions" (New York, 1810).
