At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from O.R. Strackbein to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated March 27, 1974. Strackbein is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes that impeachment, "may be based on grounds other than the commission of a crime by the president. That this represents a dangerous doctrine will become evident."
