At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Clarence C. Kott to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated May 16, 1974. Kott is against the impeachment of President Nixon. Kott notes that he is the Secretary of the Pacific Union Sabbath Schools. The letter is on the official stationery of the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and reads, "To say that the people of America are sick of the news media and political gobbledygook is the understatement of the year."
