At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Martin to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated May 28, 1974. The Martins are against the impeachment of President Nixon. They write, "What about Angela Davis, Ellsberg, Ted Kennedy, and the like who go scot free who are guilty of real crimes?"
