At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Jeffrey St. John to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated April 21, 1974. St. John is against the impeachment of President Nixon. The newspaper clipping is from the Los Angeles Sunday Times and in part reads, "And, as in the past, impeachment is turning into a crucial power struggle that runs the grave risk of doing great and permanent injury to our system of constitutional government."
