At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from D. Steven Vroom to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 8, 1974. Vroom is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He expresses anger at Congressmen trying to smear Nixon's record. Attaches newspaper clipping with similar view. He writes, "Daily, I am appalled as I listen to the radio... some members of the House and Senate are attempting to blacken the name of our President regardless of the cost to our country."
