At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping sent by Hazel Lee MacNaught, Victor Riesel, and James Keaston to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 7, 1973. Suggests that Watergate will aid Ted Kennedy's presidential run. They write, "This is the way Ted views it: He will have the money. Others would have to raise it. He has the image - Watergate has washed out Chappaquiddick."
