At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Grace Leadingham to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated August 11, 1974. Leadingham is against the impeachment of President Nixon. She wishes that Congress will give Nixon immunity and get back to issues at hand. She writes, "For heaven's sake, let's get back into orbit and start doing something about inflation and pollution and all the rest."
