At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mrs. C.E. Sharp addressed to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated August 8, 1974. Sharp is against the impeachment of President Nixon and wishes for the Watergate investigation to be concluded since the president resigned. She writes, "For the benefit of our nation and our image to the rest of the world, please do all you can to bring the Watergate tragedy to an end."
