At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Teresa M. O'Hara addressed to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated August 10, 1974. O'Hara is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes that the Republic did not support Nixon; she states that she doesn't want to vote anymore, and accused Moorhead of failing to stand with President. "Your failure to stand by the President distresses me."
