Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telephoto entitled, "Washington" dated April 11, 1968 taken by United Press International. Image is of a copy of the Civil Act of 1968 signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Wire transfer information describes it as "a bill to designed to allow Negroes to find homes outside of the Nation's slums." This refers to the act expanding on previous acts prohibits housing discrimination.
