At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One unsigned note sent to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated circa 1973. The note reads "Hope you have better luck deciphering this than we did - got no answer from the phone number we could read - so good luck, folks!! dk. no address and last name undecipherable." Sent by Stankus at an earlier date but the name was illegible. Once a second set of documents (GLC09613.02.3753.01-.03) arrived the staff was able to determine the sender of this set of documents.
