At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One document sent by Lt. Col. and Mrs. Anthony A. Stankus Sr. to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated circa 1973. Sent by Stankus at an earlier date but the name was illegible. Once a second set of documents (GLC09613.02.3753.01-.03) arrived the staff was able to determine the sender of this set of documents. (GLC09613.02.3754.01-.05) This document is an opinion piece on the founding fathers and the sacrifices they went through to create the United States. Stankus annotated the document with his own commentary.
