At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One bound volume of the magazine entitled, "Recreo de las Familias," dated 1838. Item is a Mexican publication dedicated to sciences, arts and literature. Contains an article profiling Phillis Wheatley in a section entitled "Literature de los Negros," which provides a biography, literary review and printing of three of her poems in Spanish: "On the Death of a Black Child," "An Hymn to the Morning," and "To The Rt. Hon. William, Earl of Dartmouth."
