At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Poem "The Games of Life" (p 4)
Runaway slave advertisement with profile portrait of Sancho an enslaved person enslaved by Winthrop Sargent the late governor of Mississippi. The article describes a description of Sancho and notes that he knows the trade of a barber and is an accomplished servant. It also notes that if he returns of his own free will he will be greeted with kindness. (p 4)
