At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead to Clara Link dated February 15, 1974. Item is a response to a constituent’s letter where he explains his subpoena vote. He writes, "... the subpoena proposal... was so unfair in that it denied the minority a right to subpoena evidence without the consent of the majority..."
