At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead to Albert P. Grace dated March 19, 1974. He expresses his gratitude to his constituent for expressing their views, and informs them that the House Judiciary Committee will examine all evidence. "As a member of the House Judiciary Committee which is considering this matter, I can assure you that I will do everything possible to examine the evidence carefully and come up with a just verdict."
