At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Norton L. Sanders to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated February 21, 1974. Sanders states that the Congressman's subpoena vote obstructed justice. Mentions that he was a registered Republican and voted for Nixon multiple times and for multiple offices, but he still is against Nixon's actions and says the president is a danger to the country.
