At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 14, 1973. Item is an article entitled, "Bits and Pieces Are Not Enough," printed by the Los Angeles Times. It criticizes Nixon for lack of transparency with investigators. "All this stumbling and fumbling, all these White House pratfalls on a veritable carpet of banana peels, would quickly bring the nation to a state of hysterical laughter."
