At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Vern and Vivian Ailes, and Mrs. E.L. Roedell to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. The Ailes and Roedell is against the impeachment of President Nixon and write, "Are we a nation that stands together - no - we have a crew of blood hounds instead."
