At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Ruth and Wilson Bates to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. The Bates are against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "So what if President Nixon did make a mistake, and what president didn't, must we destroy our position of world leadership and the economic and social fabric of our entire nation by continuing the spectacle that has been going on in Washington for the last 6 months."
