At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping from Leonard Black to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated February 10, 1974. The clipping is a form letter printed in newspapers with information filled in by Black who is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He writes, "Let's not play into the hands of the Communists by dividing our strength!"
