At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from George J. Brandon to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 12, 1974. Brandon is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "How can [Nixon] do the job if every little squirt (or big squirt) working for the national networks and/or the press are forever spewing out the garbage they gather in the toilet rooms around the country."
