At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from James Franklin Clark to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 23, 1973. Clark is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "The impeachment of President Nixon is unthinkable. We strongly urge your support of our president in these perilous times. Talk of impeachment is playing right into the hands of our enemies."
