At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Eleanor Colton to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 27, 1973. Colton is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Please do all that you can to expediate the appointment of Mr Ford, lest some hothead shoot Nixon." "There are no grounds for impeachment. A man has a right to fire subordinators."
