At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Beulah C. Dills to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 24, 1974. Dills is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "How can they even consider such when he has never been proven of any wrong doing. Should this happen it will be the biggest mistake our country has ever made."
