At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Molly McLean to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. McLean is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "It is so obvious that this is just a vicious, partisan scheme to replace Mr. Nixion with a democrat in the office of the President."
