At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mrs. W.O. Stewart to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 17, 1974. Stewart is against the impeachment of President Nixon. Includes a postscript expressing how she believes congressmen should behave, "P.S. Wouldn't it be nice if we had Statesmen instead of Politicians. It behooves Congress to start acting like mature intelligent men and quit worrying about vote getting."
