At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Carl B. Johnston and Lynne Johnston to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. They are against the impeachment of President Nixon. They write, "It is time for all good Americans to stand behind the President, for all good Americans to forget the petty differences of party politics and the innuendos of a slanted press and news media."
