At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Eileen McCreedy to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 25, 1973 McCreedy, a registered Democrat, is against the impeachment of President Nixon. She writes, "Have you become so political that you've completely forgotten how to be a good American, a good patriot?"
