At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Thomas E. Hanson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 28, 1973. Hanson is against the impeachment of President Nixon. Item criticizes the media’s coverage of the impeachment. He writes, "Let us all be realistic and do constructive positive things for the common good of our nation, and work with our President- not against him."
