At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Perry B. Arnold to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 28, 1973. Armold is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "The old Darkey Preacher had the idea when he said 'There are only two kinds of people, the catched and uncatched.' Some of Dicks friends got 'cotched' and he should get the matter cleaned up before it comes to impeachment, or worse."
