At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One newspaper clipping from Robert L. Patton to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 21, 1974. Patton is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He includes a message underneath the pre-written statement cut from the newspaper. He writes, "And if you refuse to let him do the job he was elected to do you'll see the biggest backlash this country has ever seen."
