At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Charles Albert Smith to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 20, 1974. Smith is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Some very vocal Americans, screaming for the scalp of President Nixon, are managing to so handcuff the President that it may soon become impossible for him to deal with the customary strength and resolve directness with all the threats that confront us."
