At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Clarence and Helen Smith to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 20, 1974. The Smiths are against the impeachment of President Nixon and write, "We the people are being shortchanged in a climate of vendetta - we voted for Mr. Nixon including a tremendous count of Democrats."
