At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Leonard T. and Anna Soper to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 22, 1974. The Sopers are against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Even though we have no doubt about his involvement in Watergate, we all know that politics is a dirty game, and the ones caught happen to be Republicans instead of Democrats, the Democrats were smart enough not to get caught."
