At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Jim Kirby to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 5, 1973. Kirby supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Dictatorship is only a step away for leaders who are allowed to put themselves above the law. Nixon must be impeached now to save democracy."
