At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One note from Katherine E. Buiboch to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Buiboch is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Stop! Do not impeach Nixon! We are so near World Peace now. (and could be so near world holocaust.) Don't throw away the gains we have made. Keep war away. Help Nixon stay."
