At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Al and Marie Sullivan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 11, 1973. They support the impeachment of President Nixon and state their opinion on him, "After listening to President Nixon's recent addresses to the nation, our family has come to the reluctant but firm conclusion that he is not interested in the welfare of America but, rather, in the welfare of Richard Nixon."
